Institutional Facts

History

Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU), Marine Sciences and Technology Faculty (MSTF) was established in 1992. MSTF is located in the city of Çanakkale and remains to be the only marine institution in the region that explicitly directs its research efforts on the Çanakkale Strait which is a strategically important waterway that connects the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea through the Sea of Marmara. Our undergraduate program offers courses in diverse fields including fisheries science, aquaculture, oceanography, marine biology and ecology, limnology and seafood technology. Our graduates are employed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry Environmental Affairs and Forestry and Directorate of Fisheries, Administration of Public Waterworks and municipalities as well as at private and commercial companies such as fish farms and hatcheries, feed manufacture plants, seafood production and processing plants, and public aquariums. Our thesis-based graduate program offers MSc and PhD degrees in 3 different disciplines including Aquaculture, Fisheries and Seafood Technology, Marine and Inland Water Sciences.

In addition to education and teaching in the field of fisheries sciences, ongoing national and international research is a full-time activity for our staff. MSTF has an academic staff of 35, including 18 professors, 12 associate professors, 7 assistant professors, in addition to 2 research assistants and 1 lecturer.

Mission and Vision

The vision of ÇOMÜ, MSTF is to become a pre-eminent institution in providing education at a universal level and pioneering sound research in the field of fisheries sciences.

Our mission is to educate and equip students with the ability to contribute valuable research and improve their critical thinking skills, entrepreneurial capabilities, leadership attributes and global perspectives in the field of fisheries sciences. One of our main priorities is to contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries resources in this unique marine ecosystem which is under the constant influence of a variety of factors including overfishing, anthropogenic pollution and maritime transportation.
